Reston USE Bulletin Board

Upcoming USE Events

Walking Group – With the unpredictable weather now upon us, the USE walking group will be limiting their walks until March, the exact date to be announced later. If you have any questions, please contact Gail Vogel at vogelgail1@gmail.com

Reston Use Will No Longer Charge Annual Membership Fees

Over the years, Reston USE has charged members a small annual membership fee. More recently, we have requested $15 per individual and $25 per household.

As of July 9, 2024, Reston USE will no longer charge a membership fee. New members will not be asked to pay the fee before their membership is activated. This is due to some changes we have recently made in our nonprofit structure.

Contact us with any questions at: RestonUSETimeBank@gmail.com.

Planned Future USE Events

USE Amble & Stroll Walking Group
This, our second walking group, will appeal to members who want to amble and stroll limited to Lake Anne and the area along the streams on beautiful paths we all can navigate. We will meet beside Bob Simon, walk as slowly and as far as we like. We can use our canes, strollers, whatever it takes to get out with friends and breath fresh air, while giving our bodies the exercise they crave.
Any interest? If so, we will set a time and date to start.
Call: Cheri Wubbels, 703-437-7545.

Reston Area Community News

We will be posting information here that we feel to be of possible interest to USE members and others in Reston and the surrounding community.

The board is exploring ways to provide Reston USE members the means to interact more directly with Cornerstones as volunteers. Currently, the best way is for individuals to go directly to the Cornerstones volunteer website to view current opportunities and sign-up.

https://www.cornerstonesva.org/volunteerops/

In the future, it may be possible for USE members to have a dedicated time slot at the Food Bank each month to help pack and sort food. We would be able to record and get credit for USE service hours in our time bank. Stay tuned for further developments.

In the meantime, feel free to go to the Cornerstones link above and find different opportunities that may interest you.

Feel free to contact me directly if you have any questions.

We are pleased to announce that Reston USE is entering into a new partnership in service to the NOVA community – with the Shepherd’s Center of Northern Virginia, located in nearby Vienna. Their services can provide a complement and supplement to those available to you in USE — like access to rides most specifically, but also their other valuable services and volunteer opportunities, such as their Friendly Callers, Friendly Visitors and Handy Helpers in the home and yard. In addition, they offer valuable learning and social opportunities. There are no fees involved. You can learn more about them by visiting their website, https://scnova.org/. Once there, you can fill out their simple application form.

In order to get more helpful information out to our USE community, USE is establishing an information-sharing partnership with Reston for a Lifetime, a local organization that seeks to educate older Reston residents on how to age in place, including listings of helpful and informative events and resources. You can check them out on their website at www.restonforalifetime.org. and sign up to receive their monthly News for Neighbors electronically.

There’s a new local print newsletter: It’s called The Reston Letter (therestonletter.com) and you may be finding the first edition in your mailbox right about now.

A free print publication to be distributed monthly. About 15,000 copies will be distributed to Reston households, but if you don’t find it in your mailbox, some local businesses will also have copies. It’s owned and produced by Herndon High School teacher, Dawn Stuvland Crosson. As copied from the paper’s homepage: The Reston Letter will be your go-to source for hometown community reporting, with a focus on schools, local youth sports, Reston-based businesses, and community events.
